You & SCRC:
You & Your Bike:
How did you hear about Southern Cruisers? I met a member at a Poker Run in 2002.
When did you join SCRC? 2002
Why did you join SCRC? I was looking for someone to ride with.
What have you found to be the most rewarding as an SCRC member? I found much more than people to
ride with. Many of the SCRC members have become much more than riding partners.
Have you ridden with an organized group before? No
How did you earn your road name? I didn't really earn the name. Being a Son of the South, the Statler
Brothers is probably my favorite musical group. They used to do a skit with "Roadhog Moran" and his
Cadillac Cowboys. I thought it was hilarious. Also from my trucking past, I've been called a roadhog
more than a few times. I wanted something that said that I don't take myselof too seriously. Life is
supposed to be FUN!
What advice would you give to a new rider or someone contemplating becoming a rider? Start slowly.
Get a motorcycle that fits you both in size and displacement. Be sure that you can hold the bike up
comfortably. I think it is a good idea to take a motorcycle safety course. After you get that bike, take it
to the back roads and ride, ride, ride. Maybe most important of all, never quit learning and improving
your skills.
Join the SCRC, have a good time. If you're not having fun, park the bike and do something else for awhile.
IF IT'S NOT FUN, DON'T DO IT!

Color? Blue
Food? It's hard to beat a good steak!
Dessert? Keep it simple: Apple pie
Book/Author? John Grishom
Vacation Spot? Myrtle Beach

Other Sides & Dimensions:
What hobbies or interests, other than riding? Woodworking, home improvements, reading, golf
What's your worst/best memory of high school and why? Worst - Freshman year, Best - Senior year
What was your favorite pet you had as a child and why? My horse. Great conversationalist. We spent a lot of time together and he never told
me my jokes were bad.
What is the most rewarding experience you have had and what made it so? Joining the SCRC. I have made many friends and had
experiences I probably would not have had otherwise. It's more like an extended family than a club to me.
What is the best thing that has ever happened to you? Marrying my wife. She has given me a home, a son. One old friend said she probably
saved my life.
What is the most embarrassing moment of your life? There have been so many, it's hard to pick just one. There is the day I lead fifty
motorcycles down the wrong road in Mount Airy, NC...
If you could travel to anywhere in the world, where would it be? I would like to see northern Europe and Scandinavia.
If you had the chance to go back in time for 24 hours, where and when would you go? 1968 was a great year! Almost any place I was!
If you knew today was your last day on Earth, how would you spend it? I would visit as many of my friends as I could and spend the rest of the
time with my family.
Who or what inspires you and why? Who - I think that would have to be my mother. Raising four kids could not have been easy, but she
always had time to spend with us and she always enjoyed seeing what was down the next road. I'm inspired by different things every day.
Somtimes, just being on my bike, traveling the roads of the nearby mountains.
If you had one word to describe yourself, what would it be? Happy

What motorcycle do you currently ride? 2003 Honda Goldwing
Wash or No Wash? I usually wash at least once a week. If you mean the
bike, it's got to really need it!
What was your first motorcycle? 1971 Triumph 650
Is there a dream Motorcycle? I think I'm riding it now.
How long have you been riding? Forty years. I took time off to raise a family.
Have you ever went down and were you hurt? The bike and I have been
on the ground several times. No injuries, and no damage.
What riding/training classes have you taken? Ride Like A Pro
Do you ride to work? Maybe a couple times a year.
Do you ride year-round? Yes
Do you two-up anyone? Not too often
Do you wrench your own bike? I only do the simple things.
Do you have anyone you prefer/recommend to do service on your bike? Tommy Wheeler at Valley Power Sports takes
care of my bikes.
Where is the furthest trip you have made? Since I've joined the SCRC, I've been to New York City, Alabama, Georgia,
Kentucky Ohio. Of course, I've been to West Virginia a couple of times, too.
Where is your next big trip planned? Probably back to the Outer Banks and the Eastern Shore of Virginia and Maryland.
Where is your favorite place to ride? The mountains of Western Virginia and West Virginia
What types of roads do you like riding? Two-lane mountain roads.
What was your worst ride and why? The Great Gravel Ride. I took a group on a road that turned into gravel...
What was your best ride and why? It's hard to say what is best. The most fun recently was a trip to the Outer Banks last
May. I got to see a lot of roads and places I had not traveled before.
What rallies and events do you like to attend? I've enjoyed all the SCRC rallies I've attended. I also enjoy some of the
non-affiliated rallies. Mountainfest last summer was a lot of fun. The ride up was a very good day.
Some Favorite Things:
Roadhog was killed in a motorcycle accident on Sunday, October 16, 2011 in Amherst County, Virginia. He will be so deeply missed by the Star City SCRC family.
